In my
About Me page I talked about how one of my prayers is that God use me on my travels to help others out. To be able to pass the love of God onto complete strangers in some little way. Not to show everybody how wonderful a person I am, but for God's glory, to show His kindness and love to His people through me. I am sooo excited to be sharing this story with all of you, because it has been an answer to that particular prayer of mine. I had to get the story down before I forgot about it, haha. I hope that this will inspire you to pass the kindness forward in your own lives somehow.
We stayed at one of those park and stay kind of hotels so I could park my car for free for the 10 days that I will be gone. The hotel, which I shall not name, was borderline. As in, it was clean, but the toilet didn't flush(nasty) and the TV would randomly turn on in the night, until I unplugged it. A little bit freaky I must admit. This was interesting because as we were to learn the next morning(bright and early at 5am) that several people, including a pilot and a flight attendent use this hotel repeatedly for different stays while they are in town. So I guess I would have expected better quality. Anyway, I tell you this because that is where we first met a wonderful lady from LA.
We all had to wait for the shuttle to take us to the airport, so as is often the case, everybody starts chatting about where they are from and where they are going. What they do for a living and so on. Many people are quite fascinated to hear about my husband who farms and usually I get several questions about farming, then when we get to the part where I mention that I raise huskies, more questions often follow that as well. This wonderful lady I will nickname "J" said that she was flying to LAX. I said that I was too, and we found out that we were on the same flight. Pretty cool, I have to say. She was flying home, after visiting some friends in the city. So we get to talking, and I find out that she is just getting over cancer, it is in remission(thank God) but it has left her with some handicaps. "J" is having a hard time dealing with some of these handicaps, because she is used to getting around very easily and it was frustrating to her that she had to use a wheelchair sometimes. "J" has lived a fascinating life, originally from England, but has been living in the states for many, many years. Her husband died, some time ago, but before he did they traveled all over the world. She regaled me with wonderful stories about their travels and adventures together and we griped about how airplane travel has become so complicated nowadays, along with some of the travel dreams we still had.
Once we got to the airport and since we were going to be on the same flight, I helped her with her luggage as we chatted away. I ended up carrying my two heavy bags and pulling hers through the airport, along with making sure my son kept up with us. She loved that she didn't have to pay somebody to do it and I really enjoyed our conversation. We got to our gate and then took turns getting our breakfast and restroom breaks taken care of without having to lug everything around.
We ended up at the baggage carousel together in LAX and I was able to meet her youngest son. Beautiful how it all works out, especially when you step out of your comfort zone to help somebody. It was just a little thing, but I was able to share my love and trust of God with her, in a totally non-threatening, natural and non-preachy way, along with being able to help her out and enjoy some good conversation while we sat around and waited. It made what could have been a really loooong wait for our flight, fun and easy. Thank you God for bringing this opportunity to me and I pray for "J," that her life be one of fabulous travel adventures and that she be able to enjoy the love of family and friends for a long time to come.

I was going through some blogs when I found your blog about random acts of kindness. I really enjoyed reading your airport adventure. Your blog more or less confirmed what I am about to embark is where God is leading me. I will be joining many of you who have been traveling. This is very new to me even though it has been my wish for a long time. Continue to be God's light and He will bless you and many will see the light and will want to know more about Him. Thank you for sharing your story..Senaf
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your kind words and I am glad that this blog helped you out. Enjoy your traveling adventure. Right now I am in San Diego traveling and plan to write more about it here shortly. God Bless!
