Wanderlust Wednesday - Key West Sunset

Key West Florida

The famous Mallory Square sunset picture and for good reason.  Mallory Square in Key West Florida is one of those must do sunset pictures.  People come from all over the place to enjoy the free entertainment in the square and the beautiful sunset and with good reason.  This is one of the MOST beautiful places to take a sunset picture.  Every direction you turn is another gorgeous sight to take in and attempt to photograph.  I had to have taken a good 50 - 75 sunset shots and got several of them that I absolutely love for different reasons.  The picture above was one of them.  Read on to see others....

My family and I took a trip to the Keys in March of 2011.  The weather was gorgeous, but too cold to swim except for my son who had no issues with the chilly water haha.  We stopped at several places in the Keys and stayed in a condo in Key Largo.  Mallory Square was a place that I wanted to hit for the sunset.  The square has free street entertainment for everybody.  People come out in droves to watch the entertainment and to shop and eat on the square.

Everywhere you turned there was a new act going on in the street.  So many to choose from.  We ended up watching a trained cat act that was quite good.

The guy who had trained these cats was absolutely hilarious and the cats had total attitudes.  We loved it and laughed so hard our sides hurt.  Each evening in Mallory Square they have their Sunset Celebration.  This is a celebration of arts and crafts, street performers, food carts, etc.  You walk around while waiting for the sun to go down and watch all of these guys and girls and eat hotdogs.  I'm not sure how family friendly it is as the evening goes on, but while we were there it was very family friendly and even better it was FREE!

Key West buoy

The famous Key West buoy.  We seriously had to wait in line for like 30 minutes to get this picture taken.  Note to fellow travelers, go early in the morning for this so you don't have to wait in line.  For me it was worth it, even though its a total touristy thing to do.  But seriously how awesome is to to be at the southernmost tip of the continental US.  By the way the actual southernmost tip of all the United States is on the island Hawaii and is called South Point.  Been there, done that one too.  Bet you didn't know that piece of information :)?  The wait was not too bad though because we were able to talk to the other travelers in line and when it was your turn you had the opportunity to have somebody take the shot for you and in return you take their picture.  It works out well for all involved.

All in all our trip to Key West and Mallory Square though somewhat "touristy" was well worth the lines and the crowds.

This is me at South Point in Hawaii, the official southernmost point in the United States.  No big long lines here, it was practically deserted.  Absolutely beautiful, but that's for another post :).

  1. Love the sunset photos, Sere! I didn't know about Hawaii's sunset photo. These tourist attractions are awesome and I would have waited too to take a picture with the buoy. we've been trying to plan a Key West trip and hope to visit soon.

    1. I love the vibe of Key West sometimes. Just very artsy and laid back - so not how I am haha. I hope you get down to Key West, all the Keys are fun and they have several activities for the kids as well.

  2. I did know about south point - we went this year. Loved it! But, I'm a geek when it comes to geography trivia travel (is that a thing?) Did you know the geographic center of the US is located just outside Belle Fourche, SD? :)

I've been really wanting to hit Key West this year. Your pics strengthened my resolve.

    1. Haha I don't know if it is Amy but I'm with you on that. I LOVE maps too! Like real maps :). I did not know about the geographic center of the US. I may have to visit that just to say that I have been there. It's like going to 4 Corners so you can take the pic of you in all 4 states. Love it! Do try to get to the Keys, it's pretty there and it has one of the longest bridges in the US. You get to the middle and it's water all around you. Thanks for reading!

  3. That's a gorgeous sunset in the first photo. I drove by the turnoff for the southernmost point of the USA, but we didn't take the detour.

    1. Thank you! The Keys make it easy to take sunset pics. I had to when I saw it in Hawaii and it was well worth the detour. They had these like boat ropes where apparently they used to move cargo up and down these ropes because it's a pretty sheer cliff and you can cliff dive as well if you were brave enough.

  4. Stunning sunset photos! We spent a couple of hours in Key West on a cruise years ago and I would love to go back and spend more time. Would definitely line up for a photo with the buoy too - great tip to go early in the morning! We were at the most easterly point in North America in the summer - Cape Spear, Newfoundland - and there were no line ups at all!

    1. Thank you! Key West is fun! Oh did you go at sunrise to see the first sunrise in North America? I would definately go to Newfoundland for that as well. Nice to know that some areas like that aren't tourist traps :). I love that kind of stuff - most westernly, most southernly, etc. It's just fun! Thanks for reading my blog!
