South Dakota Ramble Overview

I'm sitting here at my laptop in the middle of my kitchen staring at my half packed bags and running through my head all that I still need to do before we leave for our road trip.  And instead of actually getting the stuff done I'm blogging haha.  It's kind of soothing really, writing it all down.  That's part of why I do blog, but I have soooo much to get done.  On top of everything I am photographing a friend's wedding tomorrow morning before we leave and I want to do a great job for her.  So I stress.  Can anybody else relate?

I am soooo looking forward to our trip.  I really do LOVE road tripping with my family and I am so excited to be getting away from everything.  I had our trip mapped out, but already a portion of it has changed.  No matter here is the route pre change.  Most of it is the same, except for M to N on the route and I might be adding a stop in Wyoming onto the route.
South Dakota Ramble route

I am so very excited to be stopping at several National Parks, Monuments, and a National Historic Site and Memorial on our route.  It will be sooo fun!  We will be making a quick pit stop in Sioux Falls, hopefully checking out the falls that are there and walking the sculpture walk through the town.  Then of course you have to hit the quirky roadside stops on our way out to Rapid City.  I will leave you to guess which of those we are going to hit :) and see it on Instagram or my Facebook page, links below.  One stop that I am really looking forward to is Badlands National Park.

It has been ages since I have been to Badlands, like I think I was 12 when I went so I am really looking forward to going there again as an adult and with my family to hike the park.  From the Badlands we will also be hitting Mt. Rushmore.  I am hoping to do this at night to see the President's lit up and then on up to Spearfish, Deadwood, and Lead.  I would like to see the Famous Saloon #10 and walk around the historic city of Deadwood.  I have to make a personal request stop for a Harley Davidson t-shirt in either Deadwood or Sturgis before we leave town.

There are a couple of scenic drives that I would like to do out here in western South Dakota.  This one, which is the Spearfish Canyon drive and Needles Hwy in Custer State Park to name a couple.  We will make another quick pit stop into Wyoming (yeah I get to cross off another state from my 50 states list) and check out Devil's Tower.  We will be staying at what I hope is a cute, cabin for a couple of nights in Keystone which is near Custer State Park.  I have no particular plans for Custer State Park, maybe play on the lake, drive through the park to see some bison, take a horseback ride.  We will see what we feel like doing when we get there.

On our way south towards Nebraska, we will end our South Dakota part of the ramble at Wind Cave National Park to take a cave tour and then make a stop in Hot Springs to see the famous Mammoth Site.  I am hoping my archaeologically interested son will get a kick out of seeing the mammoth bones and a still going on dig site.  From there we enter into Nebraska as we make our way home.  I hope to spend a night in Scottsdale, NE and check out Agate Fossil Beds National Monument and Chimney Rock National Historic Site.  We will then follow the Platte River as we take a leisurely drive back towards the east and home.

I always seem to pack in more stuff then we end up having time for so my plans and routes are apt to change as we check things out and want to spend more or less time at different places.  The route is never set in stone.  I would love for you to follow along with us to see where the ramble take us.  I will be posting pics on my facebook page here.  I will also be posting pics on Instagram @lightofworldphoto #sdramble2013 .  I hope some of you get a chance to check them out.  You can also find me on Flickr.

I am posting this as part of Wanderlust Wednesday at Time Travel Plans and Oh the Places I Have Been at The Tablescrapper and Photo Thursday at Budget Travelers Sandbox.

  1. Your trip sounds awesome! I loved South Dakota and really enjoyed the time we spent there visiting the national parks. Glad you're going to check out Devils Tower, too. Prepare yourself for the over-the-top cuteness of the prairie dogs! Will be following your adventure on Instagram. :)

  3. I'm really looking forward to seeing your pics of this road trip - especially of Mt. Rushmore. My parents and I drove from Chicago back home to L.A. once and we passed through Wyoming and Nebraska. While we were pushed for time and didn't really explore either place, I recall that I really loved the looks of Nebraska. I'm curious to see what you'll discover on this trip. Safe travels! And thanks for linking up for Wanderlust Wednesday (I tweeted your post, by the way)! Please continue to link up on Wednesdays.
